ratio excels in all that can be taught, and teaches all he excels at. while you certainly recognise his scientific talents (but then, what contrarian fool would deny them?), you hold no respect for what he dares call pedagogy.
he is rude, tactless, emotionally unaware to the point of outright cruelty towards the most unfortunate of his students. he expels few, as they tend to drop out before he loses hope for their improvement, though that is little comfort to crushed egos. the 0,01% who pass are rightfully lauded as geniuses on par with their stringent professor.
three auditoriums over, you teach engineering—nothing lifesaving the way ratio's innovations are. still, your name appears in the occasional publication, and your students are proud to learn from you. you did assist in designing and building many of the genius society's and intelligentsia guild's spacecrafts. you're proudest of your wards' achievements; each work, each project, each test, an occasion to climb to newer, brighter heights.
your colleagues decry your methods. coddling and pampering, shaping a generation of prissy engineers, ill-equipped for the universe. you've gotten into scuffles with jerks who claimed you were bloating your students' results and their doctorates ought all to be revoked.
"maybe my courses have a 99% passing rate because i'm an actually good professor." you've said that a solid dozen times, and gotten punched at least half of those times.
somehow, ratio has never been among your detractors. the reverse is true. you criticise the way he forgoes teaching for bashing students' merest mistakes, as if they would find illumination in insults, and though you have attempted to bring it up to him, his attitude has hardly improved, and his classroom retention even less so.
"knowledge shouldn't be bitter medicine," you rant, voice nasal from the nosebleed you're pinching away, as he inspects the nicks and bruises on your face. he nods absently, and you waggle a hand before his eyes. "you above all! listen! listen well and good, knowledge should be fun, an adventure, a reward—it should be sweet. why do you insist on making it such a miserable chore?"
"should you be antagonising the man currently tending to you?"
groaning, you whack his hands off. "forget it. i'm fine. and i'll just ring up a doctor if it gets worse."
"i'm a doctor."
"a different doctor, obviously."
you slip down to your feet and take a few steps, wading past him with some effort, as though trying to walk in a wild river, pushed about by currents rushing your way. he grips your arm when you stumble, but you shake him off.
"signs of a concussion," he says. "call the hospital."
you flip him the bird, but fetch your phone all the same.
ratio is left alone, fingers tinged with your blood, unused band-aids and disinfectant on the desk. for all his genius, he hasn't mastered the emotional and interpersonal skills you value so highly. he used to loathe niceness for niceness's sake—a sycophant's game. but you support your students so all may succeed and do not suffer one mean remark about them. he admires that: your kindness, your grit.

MIT students build connections with Black and Indigenous Brazilians to investigate culture and the environment

MIT students build connections with Black and Indigenous Brazilians to investigate culture and the environment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In January 2024, at the height of Brazil’s summer, a group of 20 MIT undergraduates will arrive in São Paulo, Brazil, for the Independent Activities Period (IAP) course WGS.247/21L.592 (Race, Place, and Modernity in the Americas) jointly offered by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences’ programs in Women’s and Gender Studies, Literature, and Writing.
Continuing a program developed in 2019 and launched as a special course in 2020, the three-week course offers students opportunities to study how American and Brazilian Black and Indigenous writers, artists, and filmmakers’ art and cultural activism — particularly women’s — can impact racial justice and environmental issues.
The class will visit historical sites, cultural centers, nature reserves, and museums while also engaging in conversations with local scholars, activists, religious leaders, community organizers, and artists.
By mixing classroom discussions with on-site exploration and cross-cultural exchanges, the course offers innovative pedagogy that is experiential (learning by doing), immersive (learning within an environment), and interdisciplinary (learning across different fields).
An immersive course, years in the making
Joaquin Terrones ’99, a lecturer in literature and women’s and gender studies, was already teaching this material when he considered expanding its scope. “It seemed like the natural next step was to take students to Brazil so they could experience its incredible culture, art, and activism for themselves,” he remembers.
In 2019, he and Wyn Kelley, a senior lecturer in literature, received a Higher Education Innovation grant from the MIT Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) to develop the course and teach it as a special subject the following year.
Generous support from MIT-Brazil, the Office of Minority Education, and MindHandHeart completed its transformation into a full-fledged course in women’s and gender studies, literature, and writing as part of MIT’s Independent Activities Period (IAP) last January.
Helen Elaine Lee, a professor in MIT’s Comparative Media Studies/Writing program, co-taught the subject in its first full year, sharing her experiences using creative practices to further social justice.
Undergraduates from across MIT’s five schools, particularly Black, Latino, LGBTQ+, and first-generation college students, have enrolled. This outreach is important because some studies have shown students from these groups are underserved by study abroad programs, participating at significantly lower rates.
“Our students want spaces like the one created by this course to think deeply and collectively about the daunting array of crises we face, from catastrophic climate change to entrenched violence against communities of color,” says Terrones.
No day at the beach … well, maybe one or two
Although a few weeks in South America during January might sound like a vacation, the course is rigorous and intense, packing a semester’s worth of material into three weeks. Students spend mornings in seminar-style discussions, head out across the city for field trips in the afternoon, and return to their residences in the early evening for a few hours of readings or screenings.
For Tamea Cobb, a senior double majoring in chemical engineering and literature, the class trip to Rio led to an epiphany. “I remember waking up super early to watch the sunrise on the beach, where we saw a man practicing capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art form disguised to look like dancing by enslaved Africans forbidden from practicing martial arts. We had just learned about capoeira the week prior, so it was a beautiful full-circle moment.”
In addition to class outings in São Paulo and Rio, students also organize their own weekend trips within Brazil to places such as Salvador, the unofficial capital of Afro-Brazilian culture, and Inhotim, a vast open-air art museum and botanical garden in the middle of the Atlantic Forest.
Beyond Brazil
The course’s impact continues well after its completion as participants incorporate what they learned into their work and lives.
“The course was a priceless experience that further revealed the interconnectedness of African experiences in the Americas,” says Afura N. Taylor ’21, who double majored in physics and writing. “It has influenced my writing by providing examples of literature and cultural practices that center ancestral memory.”
Educators also see benefits. “I had no idea it would give me a new research project on the presence of Brazil in Black U.S. print culture from the early national period to the present,” says Kelley.
In fact, the course’s success has inspired two new IAP subjects in Brazil this year: 21G.S07 (Language Conversation and Brazilian Culture) by Nilma Dominique from the Global Studies and Languages Section, and 10.496/1.096 (Design of Sustainable Polymer Systems in the Amazon) by Professor Bradley Olsen in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
When asked what makes the course special, Professor Lee describes “[a] unique power [that] derives from rigorous discussions of challenging texts and films that question prevalent assumptions about history and politics, and immersive cultural experiences that open mind and heart, expanding and empowering students who often feel isolated and excluded on MIT’s campus.”
She adds, “In addition to deepening my intellectual and political understanding, this class gave me a profound experience of ancestral recovery that has fed my artistic work. For our Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ students, it was a liberatory experience of community. A re-education. A cultural and personal homecoming.”

The final results of the 2022 midterm election in the United States are in. Journalists tell us that a key issue for voters was preservation of democracy. A recent NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll showed that while inflation was the top issue on voters’ minds, “preserving democracy” captured second place. The issue that claimed little attention was education. Yet, as Thomas Jefferson once said, “An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.” That is, if we care about democracy, we must also care about education.
Only $10 million were spent on education ads by both parties between Labor Day and late October 2022, compared to $103 million spent on abortion ads by Democrats and $89 million spent on tax ads by Republicans. When education was discussed, political scientist Sarah Hill suggests that the topic was narrowly construed around culture war issues, including parental rights and ideologically-driven curriculum changes like banning books.
Given the lack of discussion around education, it is fair to repeat the claim made in 1983 that our nation is at risk. Now more than ever, the populous is required to sift truth from fiction among the many hyperbolic claims made by politicians on both sides. Without strong critical thinking skills, it is nearly impossible to manage the amount of content that people encounter every day and to form cogent opinions—be it on issues like health care, inflation, or climate change.
We are failing the next generation of citizens. Our recent Brookings blog on the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores makes this point. It showed how students’ levels of proficiency in reading and math were already relatively low pre-pandemic, with the important qualifications that NAEP proficiency is not equivalent to grade level proficiency and a high academic standard to achieve. In fact, proficiency on the NAEP requires a deeper understanding of reading and math skills, including the application of critical thinking in relation to subject area content. And many reports suggest that even reaching proficiency (as defining success through the lens of just reading and writing) will not be enough to achieve Jefferson’s vision. Children need to learn a breadth of skills that includes—but goes beyond—content, to go from classroom to career success.
Our recent discussion of education facilitated by Brookings on November 9 following the launch of our book, “Making Schools Work: Bringing the Science of Learning to Joyful Classroom Practice,” explored a comprehensive, but flexible, framework for how to educate children with a breadth of skills—how to educate children to be caring, thinking, and creative citizens for tomorrow. Born from research in the science of learning, we suggest that we must teach in the way that human brains learn through an active (not passive) pedagogy that is engaging rather than distracting, meaningful with clear connections to prior lessons and students’ out-of-school experiences, socially interactive instead of entirely solo, iterative with room for experimentation and trial and error, and joyful rather than dull and repetitive. This is the antithesis of what is going on in many schools across the globe that were fashioned for a bygone era. If we do embrace a more modern educational model, students can be strong across the skills required to navigate school, work and society: collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, and confidence (the ability to persist even after a failure and to know that you can grow with experience).
Sadly, conversation about education was limited in the most recent American election. We desperately need to ignite this discussion. If our graduates are to outsmart the robots, to be viable for the job market, and to be discerning voters and citizens, education must literally be on the ballot. Yes, a major issue for voters this year was the precarious nature of our democracy. Our democracy, however, cannot survive if we do not educate our citizens. As The Atlantic proclaimed, “Democracy was on the Ballot and Won.” If it is to keep winning, we must discuss education reform. Our science of learning can lead the way. It is imperative that children learn a breadth of skills that they can carry with them into the voting booth.

Joan Ava Gillman: Redefining Education for the Next Generation of Visionaries
Tumblr media
Teaching has long been revered as one of the noblest professions, shaping the minds of the next generation and steering the course of human progress. The impact of an educator’s influence on a child can be profound, with the potential to either ignite a passion for learning or stifle it. In today’s complex and evolving world, the necessity for educational systems that truly unlock students’ potential and contribute meaningfully to society has never been more crucial.
However, achieving this is not solely about the abundance of teachers, but about their ability to genuinely inspire and guide. Amidst the vast landscape of education, Joan Ava Gillman stands out as a beacon of hope. At The Browning School, Joan is dedicated to transforming today’s boys into the visionary leaders of tomorrow, demonstrating that exceptional educators like her are instrumental in crafting a brighter future for all.
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Joan Ava Gillman’s journey, spanning decades, showcases an unwavering commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity and instilling a passion for environmental consciousness among her students. With a career that began in the South Bronx, Joan’s early teaching methods reflected simplicity, using basic tools like chalkboards. Yet, it is her adaptability and forward-thinking approach that has allowed her to integrate modern technology into her classroom seamlessly, transforming her teaching style over the years.
Her dedication to teaching is not limited to academic instruction; Joan believes in the holistic development of students, nurturing not just their intellect but also their sense of social and environmental responsibility. The classroom, for her, is a sanctuary of curiosity, exploration, and growth. Joan’s belief that education should evolve with time has led her to adopt innovative methods, such as incorporating AI as a research aid and using digital tools like Chromebooks. Yet, she holds firmly to the idea that technology is a supplement, not a replacement, for the essence of learning.
Shaping boys the world needs, every step of the way!
The Browning School, established in 1888, is a distinguished institution dedicated to providing an exceptional, well-rounded education tailored to the intellectual and personal growth of boys from kindergarten through grade 12. Located in the heart of Manhattan, The Browning School offers a rigorous academic curriculum combined with a robust focus on character development, fostering qualities such as integrity, responsibility, and resilience.
The school’s approach is designed to cultivate not only academic excellence but also emotional intelligence, social awareness, and leadership skills, creating a balanced environment where boys can thrive. The Browning experience extends beyond the classroom, offering a wide array of extracurricular activities, athletics, and arts programs that allow students to explore their passions and talents. The faculty’s dedication to personalized instruction ensures that each student’s unique strengths and potential are nurtured, fostering an atmosphere of trust, curiosity, and mutual respect.VisionTo cultivate a diverse and inclusive community where boys become confident, compassionate, and ethical leaders.
What sets The Browning School apart from other institutions is its deep understanding of how boys learn best. By focusing on a boy-centered pedagogy, the school tailors its methods to meet the developmental needs and learning styles of boys, encouraging active engagement, hands-on learning, and collaborative problem-solving. Small class sizes ensure individual attention and foster close-knit relationships among students and faculty, promoting a supportive community where every student feels valued.
Unlike many other schools, Browning is committed to producing not just academically proficient graduates but well-rounded individuals who are prepared to lead meaningful lives. Its emphasis on character education, a rich tradition of scholarship, and the integration of ethics into the academic framework distinguishes Browning as an ideal place for boys to grow intellectually and personally.MissionTo provide an educational experience that fosters intellectual curiosity, emotional intelligence, and social responsibility. To prepare boys for lifelong learning, leadership, and meaningful contribution to society.
Embracing Technology in Education
As the landscape of education continues to change, Joan Ava Gillman has remained at the forefront of embracing technological advancements in her teaching. From her initial days of using simple blackboards, she has transitioned to incorporating smartboards and Chromebooks into her classroom. This seamless integration of technology reflects her adaptability and her belief that students must be prepared for a world that is increasingly reliant on digital tools. However, Joan is quick to emphasize the importance of responsibility when using technology in education. At her school, strict rules govern the use of technology to ensure that students remain focused and are not distracted by the very tools meant to enhance their learning.
In Joan’s perspective, technology is not the driving force behind learning but rather a tool that can complement the learning experience. While some educators may view artificial intelligence (AI) with skepticism, Joan sees it as an opportunity to aid students in their research and projects. However, she is clear that AI should never replace the critical thinking and creativity that education fosters. Her approach strikes a balance between leveraging modern tools and maintaining the traditional essence of intellectual exploration, teaching students to use technology wisely without losing sight of the fundamental purpose of education.
Global Awareness through National Geographic Certification
Joan Ava Gillman’s teaching philosophy extends beyond technology; it encompasses a broader vision of fostering global awareness and environmental consciousness. Earning her National Geographic certification has been a transformative experience in her career, allowing her to introduce her students to the importance of environmental stewardship. Joan’s certification has empowered her to create lesson plans that go beyond textbooks, introducing real-world challenges such as oil spills and environmental degradation. These projects not only educate but also instill a deep sense of responsibility in her students, showing them that they have a role to play in the global ecosystem.
Her certification journey with National Geographic gave Joan the tools to merge education with action. She believes that students should not just learn about the world but also actively contribute to making it better. Through hands-on projects, such as participating in oil spill cleanup simulations, Joan has been able to teach her students the importance of taking care of the environment. These experiences have had a lasting impact on her students, many of whom have gone on to pursue careers in environmental science and advocacy. Joan’s ability to create globally relevant curriculums that inspire students to become conscientious global citizens is one of the hallmarks of her teaching legacy.
Pursuit of Teaching Excellence
Throughout her career, Joan Ava Gillman has received numerous accolades for her contributions to education. Being named Teacher of the Year in 2017 was a defining moment in her career, validating the dedication and passion she has poured into her work. However, Joan views awards not as a measure of personal achievement but as a reflection of her commitment to continuous growth and learning. Her involvement in programs like the Globe Weather Field Test and her participation in professional development opportunities at institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History and Cornell Ornithology Lab have shaped her into a more innovative and informed educator. Moreover, Joan attended three NASA Teacher Workshops in Greenbelt, Maryland through the years.
These accolades have not only bolstered her reputation but have also provided her with invaluable opportunities to engage in professional growth. Joan’s drive to constantly improve her teaching methods stems from her belief that educators must be lifelong learners. She understands that the world of education is ever-evolving, and to truly empower students, teachers must stay ahead of the curve. Joan’s active participation in these professional development programs has allowed her to bring cutting-edge ideas and techniques back to her classroom, enriching her students’ learning experiences and further solidifying her role as a leader in education.
Instilling Environmental Responsibility
Responsibility towards the environment is not merely a duty but a profound commitment to the future of humanity, as each generation inherits the earth and must shape its legacy with wisdom and care. One of Joan’s most significant contributions to The Browning School has been her relentless focus on environmental education.
As one of the heads of the school’s green team, Joan Ava Gillman has worked tirelessly to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in her students. She understands that the future of the planet lies in the hands of the next generation, and it is her mission to ensure that her students are equipped with the knowledge and tools to make a difference. Joan’s green team initiatives range from recycling projects to broader environmental awareness campaigns, all aimed at empowering students to take action in their communities.
Her dedication to environmental education goes beyond the classroom. Joan actively encourages her students to participate in community-based environmental projects, such as clean-up efforts and conservation activities. Through these experiences, students not only learn about the importance of environmental preservation but also gain practical skills in leadership and collaboration. Joan’s commitment to fostering environmental consciousness has not only helped her students understand the critical challenges facing the planet but has also inspired many of them to take up roles as environmental advocates in their future careers.
“Leadership is not just about being in charge; it’s about empowering others to reach their full potential and succeed together.”Joan Ava Gillman
The Philosophy of Teaching for Change
At the heart of Joan Ava Gillman’s teaching philosophy is a deep belief in education as a vehicle for change. She does not see her role as merely imparting knowledge; instead, she views teaching as an opportunity to inspire students to make meaningful contributions to the world. Joan’s belief in the power of education to transform lives is evident in the stories of her students who, after being exposed to global challenges, have taken steps to address them. One such story involves a 6th-grade student who initiated a fundraiser to combat global water scarcity after learning about the issue in Joan’s class.
Joan’s approach to teaching is firmly rooted in the belief that education should not be confined to the classroom. She sees her role as a guide, helping students navigate the complexities of the world while encouraging them to think critically and act compassionately. Her lessons often transcend academic subjects, delving into broader discussions about social responsibility, ethics, and global citizenship. Joan’s ability to weave these philosophical threads into her teaching has had a profound impact on her students, many of whom have carried these lessons into their personal and professional lives.
A Lasting Legacy at The Browning School
As Joan Ava Gillman reflects on her extensive career, her legacy at The Browning School is one of inspiration and change. She hopes to be remembered not just as a teacher but as someone who empowers her students to believe in their ability to make a difference. Joan’s involvement in the school’s green team and her efforts to raise awareness about environmental issues have left a lasting mark on the school community. Her influence extends beyond the students she has taught, as her work has inspired colleagues to adopt more environmentally conscious practices in their teaching as well.
“Success in any field requires resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to continuous learning.”Joan Ava Gillman
Joan’s legacy is not confined to her environmental efforts; it encompasses her entire approach to teaching. She has consistently pushed the boundaries of traditional education, integrating technology, global awareness, and hands-on learning into her curriculum. Her students leave her classroom not only with a deeper understanding of science but also with a sense of purpose and responsibility. Joan’s impact on the education sector is undeniable, and her contributions will continue to shape future generations of students and educators alike.

5 Ways Nonprofit Education Through Organizations Like AIF Is Making a Lasting Impact on Lives in India
UNESCO reports that approximately 6% of school-age children in India–a significant number of whom come from rural and disadvantaged areas—are out of school. With India’s school-age population reaching 431 million in 2023, this affects over 25 million children. Educational non profit organizations play a crucial role in addressing this challenge, offering opportunities to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty through access to quality education.
One organization at the forefront of this effort is the American India Foundation (AIF). Known for its innovative programs, AIF is transforming the educational landscape across India by providing equitable learning opportunities for children who need it the most. Here are five key ways in which the best nonprofits for education, like AIF, are transforming lives.
1. Educational Continuity for Migrant Children
One of the biggest challenges for the children of migrant workers is the disruption to their education when families relocate in search of seasonal work. AIF’s Learning and Migration Program (LAMP) ensures that these children do not fall behind in their schooling by establishing Learning Resource Centers (LRCs) in rural areas. These centers offer bridge courses, activity-based learning, and psychological support, helping migrant children catch up and stay in school.
Take the story of Urmila, a seventh-grader whose parents are seasonal migrant workers. Thanks to LAMP, she now has access to continuous education, overcoming learning deficits and advancing her studies despite the disruptions caused by migration.
2.Narrowing the Digital Access Gap
The digital divide is a significant barrier to quality education in India, particularly in rural regions. AIF’s Digital Equalizer (DE) program addresses this by integrating technology into education, ensuring students in underserved areas can access modern tools and resources.
DE enhances learning in STEM subjects by training teachers to integrate digital tools into their pedagogy, providing students with hands-on learning experiences. Through government partnerships, DE reaches thousands of students, helping to level the playing field for rural children.
3. Empowering Educators
A well-trained and motivated teaching workforce is critical for delivering quality education. AIF understands this and invests in teacher training and professional development as a central component of its educational programs.
By providing educators with specialized training sessions and customized teaching materials, AIF equips them with the tools to make learning more engaging and effective. These efforts not only improve classroom teaching but also empower teachers to mentor students more meaningfully.
4. Bridging the Gender Gap in STEM Education
The gender gap in education, particularly in STEM fields, is a global issue. AIF’s Digital Equalizer program is working to close this gap by encouraging girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through hands-on STEM education and participation in national forums, young girls are inspired to break traditional barriers and dream big.
Shalini, a 13-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu, was once unsure of her future after her parents moved her to a government school due to financial constraints. However, through DE’s STEM Innovation and Learning Center (SILC), she was able to participate in a National Knowledge Symposium, where she presented a 3D-printed model—rekindling her dream of pursuing a career in STEM.
5. Building Community Engagement
Like the best nonprofits for education, AIF recognizes the importance of involving the entire community in its educational initiatives. By engaging local governments, parents, and community leaders, AIF ensures the sustainability of its programs. This holistic approach encourages collaboration and fosters a sense of ownership among the stakeholders.
For example, Sushilaben, a mother and former migrant worker, became a champion of education in her village with LAMP’s support. She joined the School Management Committee, ensuring her daughters and other village children receive a quality education—breaking the cycle of poverty for future generations.
Educational non profit organizations like AIF are instrumental in transforming lives by offering quality education to children in India's underserved communities. From continuous education for migrant children to bridging the digital divide, empowering teachers, promoting gender equality, and encouraging community involvement, their programs are driving long-term change. By supporting nonprofit education initiatives like AIF’s, we can invest in a brighter future where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
